Yo Ho, Yo Ho - The Pirates Fandom For Me
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Jack Sparrow sails in like a disaster and somehow leaves as a legend, and that’s the exact spell Pirates of the Caribbean keeps casting on us. We’re joined by our buddy Cody to talk through why this franchise grabbed us as kids, why The Curse of the Black Pearl still feels shockingly watchable, and why “pirate movies” basically became synonymous with one character’s weird swagger and clever chaos.
We get into the surprising Disney theme park ride origin, plus the ingredients that make the movies work: gritty-but-funny tone, one big supernatural twist in an otherwise “historical-feeling” world, and action scenes that tell jokes while they raise the stakes. We also nerd out on the stuff that holds up best over time, from the moonlight skeleton effects to Davy Jones as a CGI masterpiece, and we give Hans Zimmer his flowers for a soundtrack that instantly turns any room into an adventure.
Subscribe for more fandom deep dives, share this with the friend who quotes “savvy” unironically, and leave a review with your ranking of all five movies.

Welcome Back And Missing Nick
SPEAKER_01All right, coming to you from Fan Cave Studios, we are here for episode 31. You did your homework and you're all ready for the number. Yeah, I was looking at the number to make sure I got it right. Well, guys, this is a very special episode. Um, we've got my buddy Cody on to talk about parts of the Caribbean, but we're also missing Nick. It's kind of weird. We're still void here, you know. So yeah, it is the first time since we started. So you and Nick have done a couple episodes without me, but um yeah, I don't know. I it's like you had a baby or something and you know, yeah, had to throw a bunch in the yeah, uh oh no.
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Uh Ben, what have you been up to? Oh man. Well, we had our retreat between our la now and our last episode. Yeah. The three of us got away and had a night of planning and brainstorming and stuff like that. I think some good stuff came from it. Um, working on our website, which will be live soon, and we'll announce about that. But yeah, that's been about the bulk of I mean, just living life besides that. How about you?
SPEAKER_01Nice. Yeah, the retreat was amazing, guys. Um, I don't know. Did Nick post any videos on social media? Did you take any videos? I mean, I took some. I thought I don't know. I'll send them to him. But yeah, we stayed at this, it was it's a church, like a I'm talking like an old church, like a couple hundred years, and they converted it to an Airbnb. Someone back in 2021 bought it, converted it, and it was pretty incredible. Yeah, it was amazing. So, yeah, we'll have to post some videos for our dedicated uh viewers out there. All three of you. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00All right, well, uh, you want to hit the intro? Let's do it. Well, welcome
Why Pirates Mattered As Kids
SPEAKER_00to Phantom of Fandoms, where every week we're covering the phantoms that you guys know and love. We jump from world to world, and this week we are jumping into Pirates of the Caribbean with Cody. So, Cody, thanks for joining us. And uh, do we need to start speaking pirate or anything? I'm not I'm not doing it. Nice. Uh no. I'm gonna embarrass myself. Savvy? Savvy? There we go. Savvy. We can savvy. That's a good one. Uh so Michael, I know you guys before we started recording, we're talking about like all of your experience with the Pirates fan, but why don't you share with the audience what what your level of knowledge is about it?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, definitely. So yeah, I was just telling these guys, I think that Pirates of the Caribbean was probably the second like major kind of IP, you know, franchise that I was into um as a kid. And I don't know, I was looking at I think the first movie came out, I want to say it was 2001 maybe. Um, I need to look real quick. But um, yeah, during I mean, very similar time when I got into Star Wars as well. Um, kind of just like the late 90s, early 2000s era. So yeah, I don't know. I mean, I I had all the DVDs, I watched them on repeat. I mean, I'm sure my parents could like yeah, speak to how many times I watched, just watch it over and over. I mean, the first movie was definitely one of my favorite, I think. Um, so yeah, huge, huge fan from the beginning. Nice. I do have some childhood photos of me dressed up in various pirate costumes. Like I had multiple.
SPEAKER_00I was gonna say, everyone was a pirate at one point for Halloween, right? Yeah, that was just like a thing. Yeah, walking down the street, excellent. Yeah, but just in a pirate costume. You had to do the uh the eyeliner too, just because I mean that's what that's what makes a good pirate.
SPEAKER_01I'll have to I'll have to go back and look. I know I used eyeliner, my mom's eyeliner is a mustache, but I don't know if I did that for my for pirate specifically. But anyway, um so that's my background.
SPEAKER_00Ben, what's your background? I definitely also binged the whole three the first three, like a ton. Um it was a very you know, high school thing to do. My senior year, we had like a senior day and they like organized a bunch of stuff for us. And one of the things that they organized was um they rented out like a whole movie theater, and we could either see Shrek Three or Pirates Three, and like I mean, easy choice for me. No offense to Shrek in that world, but I mean Pirates Three, like it was and it was the the you know like premiere of it. So yeah, good first time to see it. So those first three I saw a ton. I think four I'm not as familiar with five. I just watched for the first time today, but um, yeah, that's about my level of knowledge. So, could he why don't you like let's dive into your background on pirates? Like when when did you first get into it?
SPEAKER_03So I remember, yeah, definitely as a kid, um, watching the first one, The Curse of the Black Pearl was just like whoa in my mind, you know, like there wasn't many pirate shows at least that I got into. But um you tell a kid and you tell him there's treasure at the end of this, and it got exciting, right? So it's like pirates, and that's that that lore that goes with it. Um and then yeah, just Johnny Depp killed it, and it was just such a fun movie with so many goofy moments, and I just kind of got hooked off the first movie. So I was like chomping at the bit for the second and third, fourth, and fifth movie. So that's kind of my experience of going through it as well, just watching it as soon as it came out, and then obviously on repeat once yeah, once you find it and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01So did this make Johnny Depp a superstar? I know that Edward Scissor Hands was a huge movie, but that was pretty early 90s, I want to say.
SPEAKER_00This is definitely his most iconic role. And I you could probably argue with some other stuff, but I think that like if you think about Johnny Depp, this is probably the first role you think about him in.
SPEAKER_01And the funny thing is, like, Orlando Bloom, I mean, I would argue Lords Lord of the Rings was probably that's definitely what made him.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, for sure.
SPEAKER_01Because that that came out in what, 99? Um, I'm looking right now. Curse of the Black Pearl came out in 2003, so it was a little bit after. So he was already, I think, in like Stardom, you know, yeah, from Lord of the Rings. But was it 99? I thought it was like 2001 for Lord of the Rings. Oh, it might have been, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But I'm just saying, I think it was before uh no, absolutely. No, absolutely that. Because yeah, I don't think anyone knew him before the Lord of the Rings. Um yeah. But then Kira Knightley too. Was she in anything before this? She was in Star Wars, uh, Phantom Menace.
SPEAKER_01I forgot, yeah. Yeah, which like I don't think anyone really knows that.
SPEAKER_00Well, yeah, because again, she was playing like uh Adme's twin, or twin, but the decoy, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, I didn't really launch her. I actually so I should give uh I should give our overview real quick before we actually keep going.
The Disney Ride Origin Story
SPEAKER_01I I forgot to do that at the beginning. Um, so Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm assuming we always assume most people know, but you know, it's good just in case. Uh Pirates of the Caribbean is a series of action-packed fantasy films that follow the adventures of the clever but unpredictable pirate Captain Jack Sparrow. He's on the high seas. So the series was originally based on a theme park ride, which honestly, I don't even think I really knew that. Oh, you did? I don't think I really knew that until a few years ago. Okay. I don't think that was like in my I saw that.
SPEAKER_03I was like, wow, didn't know that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I know. I I don't think I even knew that. But well, we weren't really a Disney fan. I mean, we were a Disney fan. We didn't go to Disney World, Disney um Disneyland, yeah, growing up. So I mean that's probably probably the reason why. But but yeah, the original parts of the Caribbean theme park ride opened. Yeah, it is Disneyland, um, March 18th, 67. So apparently it was one of the last Disneyland attractions that Walt Disney himself personally helped design, and then it date debuted a few months after his death. So I thought that was pretty interesting too. But yeah, I had no idea it was based on the ride. You know, I kind of thought like original IP, I'd never heard of a book, you know, Pirates of the Caribbean. So, you know.
SPEAKER_00Well, and I mean, like if you so have you have you still never been on the ride? Well, I've never been to Disneyland. Okay.
SPEAKER_03You've never been to Disneyland.
SPEAKER_00No. Wow. I'd love to go if anyone wants to help fund the trip. Yeah, sponsor is Disney. Yeah, yeah, exactly. How about you, Cody? Have you been on it?
SPEAKER_03I've never been on the ride, no. Oh, okay. Been to Disneyland many times. Don't remember it though. I was so young. Okay. Okay, gotcha.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, I I knew the ride a ton. And if you Okay, so the ride is nothing story-wise. You uh you go through a cave, there's a skull that talks to you and says, Dead men tell no tales. You go down a little waterfall, there's a pirate battle going on, like just a pirate ship attacking a fort, and then you kind of like drive like ride this little boat through the city, and there's just pirates everywhere like tearing up taverns and grabbing gold and stuff like that. And then there's just all animatronics and they're just random lines and fun music. But again, there's not really like a story or anything. So, yeah, when they announced this and and that it was like kind of based on the ride, it's like, okay, what are we what are we gonna pull from that? Because again, it's just typical pirate stuff. So they uh yeah, uh practically original IP other than the name.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sure. Yeah, well, yeah, okay, so that makes sense. So they really are just pulling the name, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Not necessarily like Yeah, because Jack Sparrow wasn't a character on the ride. They've added him since, but yeah, he wasn't the character on the ride. Like uh Barbosa, all these other people, no, no characters. The one character, the dog with the key. That's that's a cameo. That's like a little that's a little uh Easter egg of yeah, that's on the ride if there's a bunch of pirates trying to lure the dog over with the key. Oh, okay. That's pretty funny. That was really cool, yeah. Yeah, yeah, nice, very cool.
What Makes Pirates Stand Out
SPEAKER_00So, Cody, what what keeps you coming back and re-watching Pirates Again and Again?
SPEAKER_03I think it's just original, man. I mean, there's so many different stories, and it it's it's just treasure, you know what I mean? Like in pirates, it's fun, you know, it's something unique. Um and then honestly, just like the act, like the the actors, the storylines, they're all pretty good. Um, and it's just fun. And you know, one of the biggest things that I loved about it is actually the like the CGI with how early it was.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, you know, pretty impressive, actually. I will say, especially Curse of the Black Poor, when I was rewatching it this past week, I was like, man, this does hold up, you know.
SPEAKER_00I mean, uh for me it was Davy Jones, the second one. Like his animation is absolutely incredible. Yeah, anyway, sorry.
SPEAKER_03I mean, no, comparing it back to like what some of these movies are coming out with today, like that CGI, how early it was, how like uh amazing it was and he's fluent, easy, like even when they're in parts of the Caribbean. I mean, I'm sorry, the curse of the Black Pearl when they're fighting with the moonlight. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Barbosa and and Jack Sparrow going in and out of the moonlight, and they're changing the skeletons. Like it's it's seamless, it's really cool. It's just the stuff like you originality about that, like even the second one with Davy Jones, they keep you going and at World's End and the third one, it kind of continues that story. You know, it's just it's just kind of cool. It's just seamless and things like that. And I'm sorry, this Jack Sparrow is such an iconic main actor. Like the goofiness, the cleverness, like is just something I just love watching. That's that's for me.
SPEAKER_00Maybe it was jumping ahead, but like do you think that this uh movie, this series works without Jack Sparrow and that like specific character?
SPEAKER_03I mean, I it's a tough it's I I don't think so. Like I think they can, but you have to do it the right way, right? And and that's the hard part is what kind of made this this this this storyline was Jack Sparrow, right? And he's he's the consistent factor in all five movies, right? Yeah, yeah. Because with you know, four and five, we have a little bit of a a stray from the Orlando Boom Karenly kind of mainstream, you know, storyline there. But I I I think it could work. I think it is is how you how you do it, is where it comes off to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a good question because like the story itself is like fun, exciting, and then you can have a like a swashbuckling fun story without Jack Sparrow, but I don't know. But there's he I think he did he kind of was the thing that hooked audiences like initially, I think. I mean, I don't know, and I'm trying to think of what I watched recently. I don't know if it was like a documentary or something I was watching on it, but um, yeah, he was like kind of the X factor, which makes sense. I mean, yeah, his like you were saying, his character is so iconic and like just so memorable. And I feel like he's almost like in the zeitgeist in terms of like his body language, and like just like the like the weird I our YouTube our YouTubers see it uh can see it, but you know, just like the hands, yeah. It's like that's kind of like in the zeitgeist now, which is really impressive. I mean, that coming from a pirate movie, like I mean, are pirate movies even I don't think they're popular when I was a kid. I mean, maybe there's a few, but I haven't seen it recently.
SPEAKER_00But I don't think so, no. Yeah, uh, I mean, yeah, and you and like it's a thing now that like if you think of a pirate costume, you kind of lean automatically towards Jack Sparrow and like the all the bandanas and like the braided hair and beads and stuff in it, and yeah, it's that's what you think of as a pirate now, which is odd, but pretty cool. Yeah, he's kind of become like the quintessential like pirate, you know what I mean? Absolutely. Yeah. Man, so okay, okay. Uh what do you think makes this franchise stand out from other like action franchises in general? Like, I mean, is it the characters, is it just like the the world that we're in the pirates in general? Like, what what do you think sets it apart from I I can't even think of other like franchises that can to compare it to, like Star Wars or anything, like yeah, what what makes it stand out from that?
SPEAKER_03Well, I I mean obviously it's definitely the pirate franchise, it's the it's the treasure, right? Aspect of that. I I can't think of in the last I've watched a lot of TV and a lot of shows, right? And I cannot think of a show that's centered around pirates and treasure until Outer Banks came out on Netflix and everybody watched that movie because it was a treasure, right? So like I think that is what makes it go a little bit, and then they bring in the star, the the stories and things like that with Davy Jones, and ultimately that's what it's about. And that I think that's just the pirate treasure thing. I think it's just so unique.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Was Mikey, was National Treasure before this?
SPEAKER_01Uh let me look it up. I actually think it might have been the same year, honestly. Um Brocky. Common high.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, no, again, it's the hunt. Like, yeah, the the hunt. Like, I mean, yeah. I kind of oh, Indiana Jones is a good one to kind of compare it to. Like, yeah, there's always like something that they're after or yeah.
SPEAKER_01It was 2004, so it was a year after.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So yeah, then like also, I mean, you've got like the like comparing it to Indiana Jones, like it's very based in realism, except for like one little thing here there. It's like a it's like a central thing, like you know, the the curse of the Black Pearl or Davy Jones and all this other stuff. But like other than that, it feels very real, you know? So I think that that definitely like is adds an interesting twist to it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that's true. Yeah, it's almost like it almost feels historical, you know. It's like, oh, this could, you know, this could be based on like something historical. But yeah, you have that one element that's like very fantastical and kind of yeah, that's the fantasy part of it, I guess.
SPEAKER_00But yeah. So Cody, I'm I'm jumping around a little bit just because like for timing-wise and stuff like that, but um, can you think of like one scene that you think is like the perfect sp capture of the spirit of the franchise? Like the ic like an iconic moment or something that's just like if you had to make someone watch one scene, what would that be?
SPEAKER_03Oh geez. I mean, I I there's like a couple because it's like honestly, it's the opening scene when you got Jack Sparrow and the Curse of the Back Pearl rolling into the harbor, he sees his pirates, he gets his little hands, you know, and he goes right to the dock and he's bailing some water in a mini tiny tiny ship, and then he lands perfectly and walks right off. Pays the guy's shillings to put to dock his boat, not take his name. Um and then he turns around and steals the guy's money, right? So that's like it's just like, oh my god, you know, it's just like this is awesome. Um but a big part for me is also like at the end of World's End, when he takes the map from Barbosa, he gets betrayed again. Oh, spoiler alert, my bad.
SPEAKER_01Wait, uh let me do the uh let's see, what can I choose for a spoiler?
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say I was gonna I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request. Perfect, perfect, right?
SPEAKER_03Yes, so he gets betrayed again, right? And you know, all the guys in the ship want to see the map, and Barbosa opens it and it's missing. Yeah, you know, and then you have you know Jack Sparrow going for the fountain of youth. Like, it's just like he's so clever. Like, what what would make you think he knew he was gonna get betrayed? He knew it's it's just a fun scene for me. It's like, here we go, another adventure kind of thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. It does set, I mean, it really does set up the next movie really well with that. You kind of leaves you wanting more.
SPEAKER_00That brings up a point. Like, did do we know if this was originally planned to be a trilogy? Or like did they release the first one and they were gonna see how it goes, and then like from what I understand, I believe it was it was planned to be a trilogy.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um, and I want to say actually the fourth one came out quite a bit later than the original three.
SPEAKER_00The fifth one was like 2017, I think. Or yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, I mean I guess yeah, the so at World's End came out in 2007, and then the the fourth one on Stranger Tides, that was 2011. So I guess four years. But yeah, you're right, 2017 was the final one, so that was quite a bit of time. But yeah, I believe that the the first three were a trilogy, which, yeah, when you watch them, because I watched them all in the last week or so, and they are pretty like cohesive, you know. They they do like you can tell that they were kind of meant to be together. Um, whereas I feel like when you get to the next one, it is kind of like its own one-off, it's a like its own off thing, you know. Like you were saying before, you don't really have the main storyline with like Karen Knightley or Orlando Bloom, but it's more like Jack's kind of own side adventure in a sense. But um, so yeah. Nice. Yeah.
Starter Pack And Elevator Pitch
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, hey, let's jump to our uh starter pack segment. So, Cody, I mean, there's five movies, there's the ride, there's a CD-rom with Pirates of the Caribbean themes on it that I had when I was a kid. Where if someone wanted to get into Pirates of the Caribbean, where would you start them?
SPEAKER_03Or you gotta start it. Curse of the Black Pearl. You have to start there. It just sets everything. Like for like I said, like one of my favorite scenes is the first scene to that, to how you understand what okay, what's the black pearl? Why is it so important to Jack? And you know, why is it such an iconic ship or you know, a sought after things like that? It's just one. It's just such a good first movie. It sets it up perfectly. Like it it's just such a good start.
SPEAKER_01Do we know do we know why the black pearl is so special to Jack? Did we ever find that out? It was his first ship, right?
SPEAKER_00Or am I?
SPEAKER_03I think it wasn't his first ship, because I answered that in Dead Nintendo Tales. Okay. Um Nintendo Tales. Sorry, I misspoke. Because he takes over for the ship captain there. And that's when he beats Salazar.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, technically that was his first trip because he was first time captain there and he got his tribute. I don't know if the black pearl was, but I know he acquired the black pearl through Davy Jones. He was commissioned, I believe, in the second movie, and that's why Jones is coming at him to collect the debt.
SPEAKER_00Gotcha.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I know I think Davy Jones actually saved the Black Pearl, and then he owed his debt to Davy Jones for that. But I don't know if he got it from Davy Jones originally. But I don't know, I was kind of thinking about it, because yeah, watching the three movies this week, um, it all for Jack Sparrow, it always it always does come back to the Black Pearl, like him just being on it, like owning it basically. And it but I don't ever know it says like why that is. Like, what is it about the Black Pearl that's like just so I mean it's obviously a fast ship, but like is being fast like enough to make you just so hellbent on like you know, keeping your ship and like you know, whatever.
SPEAKER_00What do you guys think? It maybe it's I mean, I think from like analyzing his character, Jack is so caught up in everyone recognizing that he is a captain. Yeah, and like his his legend, his tale, and so maybe like just so much of him and his identity has been tied up in the black pearl that like that's kind of like his thing now. So like without it, he doesn't know who he is. So yeah, no, that makes perfect sense. Yeah. Cause yeah, like I mean, even from the first one, like he uh he everyone's like or he tells everyone, like, you know, what you you must have heard of me of Captain Jack Sparrow, and everyone's like, who? Like what?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's funny. Yeah, no, that definitely makes sense. Um, all right, well, okay, so to end our uh starter pack, so um we always like to ask our guests to give an elevator pitch or slash impassioned plea. So if you had, you know, 30 seconds to like convince someone basically to get into Pirates of the Caribbean, what what would be your uh your elevator pitch?
SPEAKER_03So my elevator pitch. Oh boy, this is gonna be a tough one.
SPEAKER_01And I I might have some music going on underneath. Make it real dramatic, yeah. Make it really dramatic.
SPEAKER_03Okay, here we go. You want to watch a movie with great pirate ships, amazing shores, battles, flintlock pistols, swords, skeletons, anything you could dream of, treasure, as it's closed, adventure across the world's end, to David Jones's locker. You gotta watch Better State Caribbean.
SPEAKER_00You're good. Yeah. No, you brought up a lot of good elements and things, again, like we hadn't seen a lot of in movies and in cinemas for a long time. Like, I was just thinking as we've been talking, like, some great sword fighting, and like besides like Star Wars, maybe like what other sword fighting do we really get to see? Like, I mean, honestly, that's a little different, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Very technical, too. Like the first sword fight between Jack and um Will is honestly pretty amazing. It's a pretty iconic choreography, and like and it's very clever too. All the sword fights are very clever, in my opinion, you know, just the way that they kind of play themselves out. Um yeah, and I honestly I really can't, to your point, I really can't. I'm trying to think of a movie that has something similar. I mean, you have sword fights in like you know, Lord of the Rings, but it's not that like one-on-one duels, like a duel. Yeah, it's more like kill the other person, you know, they're in war, you know. It's not like that, yeah. I don't know, kind of like sophisticated duel.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but and also something new is like the ship, the ship duels, right? So yeah, yeah, cannon fire, and it's it's the things you always dream of. Like you read about it in your history books, pirates were a thing, they were real, right? Cannon fights were real in ships, and like you actually get to see and the CGI is amazing. Again, such an early movie with CGI is amazing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean, and I know they did a good amount practically too. Like they were there were whole ships that they were on out at sea and stuff like that. But yeah, still they're like the way that they put it together is yeah, a cinematic, just like I won't uh masterpiece is like a heavy word, but like to me, yeah, it's it's an iconic action movie. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, for sure. Yeah, that makes sense. Did you guys watch um Puppet Treasure Island? Oh, yeah.
unknownI did not.
SPEAKER_01Okay, no, no, no.
SPEAKER_00How have we not brought that up before? Wow.
SPEAKER_01Um we probably have at some point.
SPEAKER_00Another iconic pirate, Tim Curry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Tim Curry. Yeah, yeah. Because I was trying to think to myself, like, we're we're talking just now, like, and I I might mention this in the beginning of the episode too, but like what other Pirate movies are there. I mean, oh, Treasure Island, like the original Treasure Island is very famous. But are there really any that have like been this, I don't know, like iconic in the zeitgeist? Like made it this big, basically.
SPEAKER_00I feel like all I can think of is in the Goonies, what's whatever movie they watch in the Goonies that's from like the 40s or 50s or whatever. There's probably something to that level that there used to be, like that, yeah, this iconic pirate movie, but in our generation for sure, nothing else.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. It seems like Pirates of the Caribbean like completely filled that void. You know, if it hadn't been this big, I wonder if there would have been another, you know, pirate movie that popped up that people liked, but it's just it's too big. Like you can't, you can't, like, uh nothing's gonna compare to it, you know, almost in one sense.
SPEAKER_00Awesome. Well, why don't we take a
Break And The Music That Hooks
SPEAKER_00quick little break? We'll be right back after this. Sounds good.
SPEAKER_01I love it so much. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the scene of Davy Jones playing the organ is actually a pretty beautiful scene. It's really interesting. Like, I don't know, the idea of having an organ on a ship is just very like BA, you know? Yeah, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_03But is he playing the organ with his hands or his tentacles? Well, are they both right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, are they his hands? Kind of an extension, I guess. We he's got the crab claw, so it's like how's he playing?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, makes it all the more impressive. Yes. Yeah. Um, so I mean, let's all we all we talk about John Williams all the time. So this is Hans Zimmer, right?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, let me look it up. I believe the first one was Hans Zimmer, but I think it changed after that.
SPEAKER_00Again, talk about iconic themes and like the music, the music sets the scene for so much. Like, yeah. Uh so I I mean, I love it. And like that main theme that you hear everywhere still to this day, like when you think anything pirates, at least in my head. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so the for the first one, so Curse of the Black Pearl, um, Klaus Badelt, I don't know if I said that right, uh composed the score for Curse of the Black Pearl, but with significant contributions and production by Hans Zimmer. Okay. So that makes sense. Um, Hans Zimmer did Dead Man's Chest, At World's End, on Stranger Tides, and then uh Jeff Zanelli uh composed he did the the composition for Dead Men Tell No Tales. Gotcha. So yeah, it was so it was mostly Han Zimmer, like you said. Yeah. Which, yeah, we we do need to talk about him more. Yeah, yeah. John William gets he gets too much uh attention on this show.
SPEAKER_00Debatable. Yeah. Is it too much? Anyways, uh so Cody, we we like to start off uh our second half kind of talking about the fandom itself.
Fandom Sightings Games And Hot Takes
SPEAKER_00So, like, do you see any other like pirates content out there, like kind of themed around Pirates of the Caribbean, through social media, YouTube, or like you see anything else out there about pirates or that sort of thing?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, like on social media and stuff like that, you always see like the pirate impersonators and uh Jack Sparrow costumes and things like that. But that's that's pretty much all I've seen. I haven't really seen any like there actually there hasn't been any um break-off stuff, but I haven't really explored the world of YouTube too much on that with uh fan makes and things like that. Sure. But I'd actually be curious to get into that and kind of see if anybody has uh tried to extend any of that.
SPEAKER_00Are there any pirates video games? I feel like they made one or two that tied along with this that like weren't great. I mean, besides that, there are some definitely some pirates video games. There's um recently like they re-released Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag, I think is what it's called. Yeah. Black S Black Sales, I believe. Okay. Is it Black Flag? I think it's Black Flag. Because I think Black Sales is the show we were just talking about. But yeah, uh, and then like there was gosh, my mind is completely blank. There's like a multiplayer game where you play as pirates like and you rob each other. Nice. Sea of Thieves, that's it. Sea of Thieves. Okay. Sam, who's been on to talk about uh Jurassic Park, like she's she and I were big into that for a while and played a good amount of that. So yeah, that was a fun one again, just a complete spin-off of it. And like actually I think Pirates of the Caribbean had some content inside the game, like you could play too. That was interesting. But yeah, there's there's definitely been some Pirates games out there. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um okay, so what sort of do you feel like there are any hot takes around the fandom? Like debates on certain characters or if someone did the right thing or anything like that? Or do you have any hot takes even?
SPEAKER_03Jeez, that's a tough one.
SPEAKER_01I can tell you Nick's hot take. Okay. It would be that he likes episode four and five better than the first three.
unknownWow.
SPEAKER_01Wow, don't put that on him. We haven't talked to him about it. All right, Nick, let me know if I'm wrong. Shoot me a message. I'm kidding.
SPEAKER_03Hot takes. I mean, I can't just I'm I'm blanking right now. Um not the top of my head I can think of right now. I'm so sorry.
SPEAKER_00Um, you're good. There may not be. I mean, again, it's a fairly straightforward.
SPEAKER_03I mean, I think it it always comes down to like the Johnny Depp scenario, right? I mean, and I'm not getting the the real world stuff, but I I really wonder if that was why they stopped continuing making more pirates or even in spin-offs because of that whole scenario. That may be my hot take. I don't know if it's a hot take or a controversial take, but you know, I really wonder if that's the reason why they haven't made more.
SPEAKER_01Well, the last one came out in 2017, and I don't know, I guess when did all that stuff come out? Was it around that was the late 2010s, wasn't it? When all the Him and Amber Heard. Yeah, all that stuff. I can't even remember.
SPEAKER_00It's all a blur. Yeah. I feel like it was after that. Really? A little bit after. Yeah. Cause I mean, like, what Johnny Depp hasn't done anything since the Fireds movies. So, like, yeah, I think he's just been kind of out of it. Just again, like he his name was thrown into such a I don't know, like a negative light that he hasn't been able I don't know if by choice that he hasn't done anything, or no one wants to really cast him. It could be either.
SPEAKER_01It does seem like he's been vindicated a little bit. I mean, I think generally people are like seem to be okay with him just because I think people saw Amber Heard's, you know, true colors, so to speak. Sure. But I'm not sure. Well, here's a potential hot take, or I guess I'm kind of jumping to one of our questions here, but do you think uh Captain Jack Sparrow is a genius pretending to be foolish, or a fool who occasionally acts like a genius and just gets lucky?
SPEAKER_03I mean Jack, I I think he's definitely clever. Definitely cares. But I I don't I don't think he's a fool. I think he's just lucky and clever. I mean, I think that's what it is. Yeah, I mean it's insane. Some of the stuff that he does, like it seems like it's really thought like through. Like, especially some of the action scenes, you know, like when he does some things and it's just the one scene in um what is it, at World's End? I believe when he throws the there's like a pastry up into the what is that at World's End? No, it's the fourth one. Is that the fourth one? I was just about to start watching. He th tosses the croissant or pastry up and he looks at it and then he like plans his whole escape out of here. He's banging his it's just he does, he's so smart when it comes to that and clever, and then he takes it and leaves and swings on the chandelier and escapes, right? Like it's I don't know, he's lucky and he's clever. I mean he is.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, just a good combination. Somebody, yeah, some people have everything. That is one of my favorite aspects though of the storytelling in general is how they tie together, like I don't know, all of his kind of I'm not even sure what to call them exactly. All of his like plans, you know, how they all kind of come together in the end, like all these like loose ends that are out there, and like, you know, these things are being set up throughout the move, you know, throughout like as the story goes on, and they all kind of come together. Um and I feel like we get the first like piece of that when Will tells Jack his name, you know, when he's in when Jack's in prison. And then you see Johnny Depp. Like Johnny Depp did an amazing job. Like his face is like contemplating like all this stuff, you know, and then he agrees to go with him. Um, you know, I think that's kind of the like you kind of see his his wheels spinning in a sense.
SPEAKER_00But okay, here's here's something we can debate about a little bit. Is Jack Sparrow a good person? Dang.
SPEAKER_03When he has to be. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Wait, I was gonna oh, where's our crickets? Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I was gonna hit that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know. I well, he does the right thing at the end.
SPEAKER_03He does.
SPEAKER_01I would say so. So you have you have Will saying at the end of Curses Black Pearl, like he's a good man. He uses that phrase when he's standing between him and Commodore Norrington. You have Elizabeth when they're toasting Jack at the end of Dead Man's Chest, say, you know, he was a good man, like she raises her glass. But then you also have them like hating him, you know, like throughout like various parts of the series. And he does betray them like in a lot of ways.
SPEAKER_00I mean, I I do think he puts himself first. Yeah like a hundred percent of the time, 99.9% of the time, maybe. But yeah, like he's so again, like being that selfish, like, yeah, does that take away from the good things he does and like how he does help some people?
SPEAKER_03See, I don't know. I mean, because like all his the major plot points, like he always does the right thing. Per se, like when you know Orlando Bloom gets stabbed, and then you know, with uh Dead Man's Chest, and you know, Jack wanted to sail the seas forever and eternity. That's what I wanted to do. But he takes Will's hand and does it for him, right? So he had the opportunity, the heart's in his hand, he's like, Oh that's a good point. Yeah, you know. Um Dead Men Tale, No Tales, like I mean, all that kind of stuff he had to do. That was not Dead Man's Chest, it was that was uh and things like that. Um and then also, too, uh, if you think about it, like the Fountain of Youth, right? At the end when he could have done what Blackbird wanted, but he didn't. He switched it and did the right thing at the end to save whoever. Uh what's her name? Um crap, I'm like, I know, it's it's so hard. I'm terrible with names sometimes, but I I feel like that's why I said like when it comes to like push comes to shove, I feel like he does the right thing, but the way to get there is not a straight line.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, absolutely. So yeah, I'm thinking of okay, so in DD, I don't know if we talked about this in our DD episode. There's a like uh a three by three grid of like the top goes from lawful on one side to uh uh chaotic on the other side, and then on the the left axis is good to evil, and so he's definitely on the chaotic like half, like about as far none, like yeah. But yeah, the the question is like between is he good, neutral, evil, and I'm like, I'm having struggle, I'm struggling to place him.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel like it's mostly neutral, but yeah, I I I liked what you said, Ben, about how he's he puts himself first. Yeah, like that's very apparent, but then but he does have those moments like you brought up, where he does sacrifices, yeah, where he sacrificed himself, but I think overall he kind of is putting himself first, like on his own trajectory. But I don't know, that's a really good question. I'm not sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, you kind of see that inner turmoil in him, right? Yeah, absolutely for sure. Definitely. I only think about that. Like it when was it is it dead man? Is it dead man's chest when he gets eaten by the Kraken?
SPEAKER_01Uh yes, yeah.
SPEAKER_03So he got off the boat and was rowing away, and they're all fighting. Yeah, I forgot about that. You're right. He comes back. And he goes back and then he takes a shot that you know blows it up and gets him a chance to get away, right? So it's like you see that inner turmoil in him. He wants to be selfish, but in the end, he always makes the right decision.
SPEAKER_00Sure.
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Man, so it's almost like the person within him is pretty good and will make those decisions, but there's still like so much pirate in him of yeah, just wanting the treasure, wanting the loot, wanting, yeah, like glory that like that overrides that sometimes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, exactly. Nice before we move on to our next segment. Um,
Pirate Builds And Favorite Props
SPEAKER_01I brought something for show and tell. So this is my uh it's called Iconic Pirate Ship, which is kind of a generic name. It is not Pirates of the Caribbean license. It's a fairly recent one, isn't it? It's yeah, it came out just a couple months ago. Yeah. Um, and I picked it up a few weeks ago, and I've just been and I've been watching well, this week at least, I was watching the movies while I was building this, and or at least part of it. And uh, so I really enjoyed that. I had a good time. But yeah, I mean it has so many cool details. I'll show you guys after.
SPEAKER_00I'll have to look up my first like Lego I purchased. My like first big Lego I purchased for myself was was a pirate ship too.
SPEAKER_01Oh, really? No way.
SPEAKER_00It was from uh we knew we were going to the Mall of America when I was like probably like 10. And like um like you know, there weren't Lego stores like everywhere. Right, right. So the fact that like the Mall of America had one, I was like, oh, I'm gonna save up my money. I saved up like a hundred bucks, something like that, and I bought like a big pirate ship. And that was like my first like big Lego purchase, and I would remember how happy that made me.
SPEAKER_01Dude, I would love to see that.
SPEAKER_00I gotta find it somewhere. It's gotta be around. In the in the parents' basement. In the parents' basement, yep. Nice, heck yeah. Uh well, let's move on to our would you rathers,
Rapid Fire Would You Rather
SPEAKER_00Mikey?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sounds good. Ah, we don't have Nick here. He's he's so good at these. All right. So this uh, Cody, this is our rapid fire would you rather? All right. So, first, would you rather fight a kraken armed with only a teaspoon or negotiate with J. V. Jones using only interpretive dance?
SPEAKER_03Uh definitely Davy Jones.
SPEAKER_01Wow, okay. Can you give us an example right now? For YouTube watchers. Nice. Now that makes sense. I get that. Um, would you rather have Jack Sparrow as your Uber driver or your financial advisor?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he drinks way too much rum for me. I'm gonna go financial advisor.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Listen, he is a man about his money. I mean, he he cares deeply. So always ends up losing it though. Yeah. Yeah. That was good. Um, would you rather be cursed to constantly say savvy or after every sent after every sentence, or dramatically stumble into every room like Jack Sparrow?
SPEAKER_03I gotta go with the savvy. I mean, I it's so fun, right? Savvy. Savvy.
SPEAKER_01I'm just inviting it. Instead of saying right, you gotta say savvy. Yeah. You know, you walk into work, like some big meeting with the executives, you stumble in, you know, your wedding have to stumble in. So I think the savvy maybe Kramer entrance a little bit too. Nice. That's good. All right. Uh let's see here. Would you rather have Captain Jack Sparrow narrate your life or have a pirate soundtrack play every time you enter a room?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I gotta go with the Captain Jack narrative life. That'd be fun. That'd be really fun.
SPEAKER_00Do you only you hear it? I'm assuming that's what I'm watching. That's okay. That's a good question.
SPEAKER_01I'm not sure. Uh, that's a good one. Um, let's see here. Would you rather find a treasure chest full of gold or a treasure chest full of tacos? Who wrote these? I don't know, Mikey. Who wrote them?
SPEAKER_00Treasure chest full of Chad GPT? Not Chad GPT. Okay. Yeah, gold makes sense. I'm I'm gonna go gold. Because with all that gold, you can buy as many tacos as you want. That's what I'm thinking.
SPEAKER_01Nice. Uh, would you rather spend a day trapped in Davy Jones' locker or a week trapped in Jack Sparrow's personal hygiene routine? I'm gonna go locker.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah, some of the the teeth and uh you can it's never it's a movie you can see odor on screen. I've never seen that.
SPEAKER_01Dude, genuinely, which which is impressive about the movies, they really do make them feel like kind of gritty and dirty. 100%, yeah, grungy, which is yeah, great. I mean, I love that about them. You know, it makes me feel a lot more realistic. Being able to smell what you're seeing. Well, there's a scene in uh At World's End when Jack like breathes onto Will, like he breathes in his face and it makes Will fall off. Yeah. Which, yeah. And I feel like that's kind of a running joke throughout the the whole series is Jack's bad breath. Like um, like Governor Swan in the first movie, he like you know, flinches like, ah, you meet him when Jack gets close to him. And then I know there was a couple other examples with the thing with Will knocking him off the boat.
SPEAKER_00I think there's Gibbs in at the very first movie when they toss a bucket of water on him and they're like, That's to wake him up, and the second one, that's for the smell, or something like that. Yeah, he just nods.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's good. All right, we got a couple more here. Uh, let's see here. Would you rather have a pirate parrot that only tells embarrassing secrets or a pirate monkey that steals only your left shoe?
SPEAKER_03Um, I'm gonna go pirate monkey steals my left shoe personally. Only because it's hilarious. And I've always wanted one monkey to be awesome.
SPEAKER_01Nice. All right, that's good. Uh, would you rather win every sword fight but lose every argument, or win every argument but lose every sword fight?
SPEAKER_00How many sword fights are you getting into on a day-to-day basis?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, I think I gotta go with the one that uh I I stay alive in. So I'm gonna go. I think if you lose a sword fight, you may not be alive.
SPEAKER_01So I'm gonna I'm gonna go with the ladder. All right, fair enough. All right, last one here. Uh, would you rather have unlimited rum but no treasure, or unlimited treasure, but every pirate in the Caribbean knows about it?
SPEAKER_02Hmm.
SPEAKER_03Are we back in that time? Because if it's now, I mean I can buy a safe that nobody's gonna touch it.
SPEAKER_00How many pirates still are there?
SPEAKER_03Back in that time, it's gotta be unlimited rum, right? I mean, because then I could be best friends with directory.
SPEAKER_02Always gone. Yeah. Yes, yes, yes.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's good. Now, here's a quick question the side note. Is it Caribbean or Caribbean? Or should we have this debate?
SPEAKER_00Well, I mean, I feel like with this franchise in particular, it's always pirates of the Caribbean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've that's how I've always thought.
SPEAKER_00But the place itself is Caribbean for whatever reason. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I would agree with that.
SPEAKER_00Like Caribbean cruise? Yeah. You don't see Caribbean cruise. No one says that. I wonder why that is, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, uh, yeah. I mean, I I've never heard it pronounced any other way.
SPEAKER_00All right, get us get at us in the comments. Is is it Caribbean or Caribbean? Yeah, truly. Please leave a comment. Yes.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, let's get into our uh just kind of broader group discussion here. Um
Best Characters And Why It Endures
SPEAKER_01we'll we'll start with some of our questions. Um I'll jump into one.
SPEAKER_00Uh I've got one. We've been talking about Jack Sparrow a lot and valid, like he's kind of the centerpiece of the whole franchise. What other characters do you feel like really stand out to you?
SPEAKER_03To me, I I think for me it's Josh McGibbs, Master Gibbs. He's in every movie. He's always with Jack, he's his right hand man, and he always finds his way in a predicament and things like that because of Jack. Um just to see that loyalty out of him and things like that. I always like him. He comes in in good moments and brings not always a comedic relief, but even when he tells some of his stories, his mannerism, so to speak. I think he just does a really good job of playing that part. Yeah, a little accent to Jack Sparrow. Nice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I agree with that. And I love the actor too. We were looking, I was looking up the cast. Kevin McNally. Nice. I don't honestly don't know what else he's been in. I can't even think.
SPEAKER_00I can't think of anything at the moment.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I feel like this was kind of his one big, like, iconic role. But he's I mean he's so good. He's like a perfect fit, you know? Absolutely. Um yeah, that's a good one. Um why do you think the franchise became such a cultural phenomenon?
SPEAKER_03Oh man, I mean I really see I I I said earlier in the show about like the pirates and stuff, but like I'm really thinking back to this, and I was I'm kind of kicking myself for not saying this earlier. But like the CGI fight scenes and some of the stuff that happens in this in these show in these movies is incredible. I was just thinking back to Deadman's Chess when he's uh when they're on the wheel. Uh it's an orange and Jack and Orlando and and and Will all sword fighting on this wheel that's rolling through. Like some of the the creativity and it comes into that. Like, even think about like Jack when you know he has the black marks black spot and he's he's marked and he's on the island and he's these these cannibal people are and he's saying all this uh hoopla. You know, you know, and they're like understanding him, like it's just so funny, and then they're all in a ball and they have to find their way out. Like, I just think some of that stuff is just so unique, the comic relief with the adventure, and they do it so well. That's why I think it became such a culture phenomenon. Like it's it's just well done.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely, yeah. I agree. You brought up a good point that we kind of didn't get into yet, but like I love the pirate lore that's throughout the the series. So, like the black spot, for instance. Like, I'm thinking back to Treasure Planet, or I'm sorry, Treasure Island. Well, Treasure Planet was a spin-off of remaking of Treasure Island. But Treasure Island, Billy Bones just gets like a paper that has the black spot on it. And so that's kind of like this pirate thing. But I love how they turned it into like more of a fantastical, like mystical thing where it's like, yeah, it's it's like a I don't know, it's like a disease like on his hand, you know, that's the black spot. And like, I don't know, just that type of lore, yeah. I know, yeah, he does that. I I love the lore. And like, yeah, when they talk about the you know, the pieces of eight and um, you know, like the the pirate code, and like I don't know, I'm trying to think of all the different examples of the flank dashman, yeah. J.V.'s locker, like bring all that stuff to life. I really, really love that.
SPEAKER_00That you know the fourth one bringing the most famous pirate of all, like real life, Blackbeard to like reality.
SPEAKER_01Edward Edward Teach, I think. Yeah. Yep. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_00Uh okay, looking down our list, this is one I I think I have an answer to, but I'd love to hear your answer. If you could own one item, one prop from the films, what would it be?
SPEAKER_03Like fantastical prop, or are we talking like actually from the movie?
SPEAKER_00From the movie itself.
SPEAKER_03I gotta go with the black pearl in a mini bottle. Okay. That'd be nice to get it. I know that it's probably not possible, but it I think that'd be really cool.
SPEAKER_00It's gotta be something we can do with some lights or something. Yeah, yeah. Right. Uh man, nice. For me, it would be the compass. Just like I'd love just like being able to pop it open every once in a while and just like sit there while I'm thinking about something and just pretend like it's gonna like point at whatever I need. But yeah, just be able to like flip it open. Yeah. Mikey?
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say uh Jack Sparrow's hat. Um I I owned uh more than I care to admit, uh try triformer hats when I was a kid. Some of them were like Revolutionary War style, like more formal military. Some were pirate, like more pirates. And uh yeah, Nick, you'll post some pictures on social media of me. Um but I you're agreeing to this now. But I just love the hat. Yeah, it's a great hat. Nice. Uh yeah, that was a good question. Um, all right, Cody, which which character would you most want on your pirate crew and why? And it can't be Gibbs, because you already talked about him.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's fair, that's fair. I um what's his name? Um He's the mute who has the parrot. I would love that cotton. Cotton, thank you. I'm just love to have the parrot around. I mean awesome, you know.
SPEAKER_00Nice. Well, you wanted the monkey earlier. I was half expecting Jack the monkey, but I was thinking about Jack. Does he does he count as a crew member?
SPEAKER_01No, I think he does, yeah. I think he does. I mean, he contributes a lot.
SPEAKER_00He does really like pushes a spot for battles, and yeah. If you ever need something, he'll he'll get it for you. And he doesn't die. Yep, that's true.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's true.
SPEAKER_00Oh man. Okay. Uh let's see. If you lived in the world's world of Pirates of the Caribbean, would you choose to be a pirate? Or like an officer hunting pirates or something else? A swordsmith, a farmer, a governor?
SPEAKER_03I would want to be a pirate who doesn't die. Yeah. Cursed pirate. Yeah. You know, like one of the one of the main actor characters, because you know, I feel like all the secondary ones always end up on the bottom of the Davy Jones locker per se.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they really do. Yeah. I um this is a fun fact about me. I actually get pretty terribly seasick. So um when Dane and I were on our honeymoon, I'm I'm sorry, listeners, I'm gonna tell the story. I when we were on our honeymoon, we went on a whale watching tour. We were in Iceland, went on this whale watching tour. So beautiful. I mean, the ocean was beautiful, the like the scenery, like the whales were incredible, like they were just all out doing different stuff. And that was the probably the sickest I've been in my life. And so I think I would not survive as a fire.
SPEAKER_00I would have to be a landlocked something, you know, farmer, governor, whatever. There you go. Oh gosh.
SPEAKER_01All right, well, Cody, which which movie in the series is your favorite? And I what makes that stand out for you?
SPEAKER_03Oh, favorite movie question is always like the one of the hardest things to answer. Because each movie in its own has its own unique ways and different things that it goes about, but I gotta say probably Curse of the Black Pearl, honestly. It's just it just starts it for me. I'm a big like first movie type guy, you know, because it kind of sets the tone and sets the stage for things. So I I'd probably go with that with.
SPEAKER_00I think it's it's probably one of the better self-contained ones. Yeah. I think so. I mean, it's almost as if like that's why I asked the question earlier about if they wrote it as a trilogy, because like it could stand on its own, and you know, just Will and Jack are off doing their own adventures now, and you don't know what. But yeah, I I think the first one is just like kind of a perfect encapsulation of the series.
SPEAKER_01I agree with that because I don't really like the fourth and fifth. Those are definitely my in the bottom for me. Um so yeah, going back and and two and three, like you're saying, like they kind of have to go together. You don't get any resolution if you don't watch both of them together. So to your point, like it being its own self-contained and the best version of that, I think that's yeah, that's that's true.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I do like five, but I do have a bone to pick with it because it does kind of break
Ranking The Films And Lore Problems
SPEAKER_03the compass. Okay, what's the problem? Yeah, hot takes. So the five actually contradicts how Jack got the compass. So um, you know, Calypso, Tia Doll, I think it was. Tia Dalma. Tia Dalma, she actually says in in the earlier movies that Jack has the compass because of her, like she gifted it to him. But in five, if you notice, Salazar and his uh Merriman of you know Spanish Pirates, you know, go to Spain that won the World Cup. But um they are trapped there because of Jack's compass. In that movie, when they do a when Salazar is with Barbosa and they're talking about the flashback of how he got trapped into this um in the the devil's triangle triangle, thank you. And it it goes a young Jack and he takes over because the captain was shot or yeah, whatever it was. Um and he gives it, he goes, Jack, it's up to you now. And he gives him the compass and then he does the whole maneuver to the the the trap Salazar in the compass. That contradicts directly with Tia Dalma getting it. Yeah, so it was like that's like a hot take when it comes to the story. It's like, okay, so which one was true? And people are like, oh well, she could've she could have whatever and given it to him back and so on and so forth, but it's not true because Salazar wasn't freed until Jack bartered away the compass. So there's no way if he ever lost the compass that Salazar would not have come after him. So it's like there's a big kind of lore discussion there.
SPEAKER_01Hmm, I gotcha. Yeah, I need to go back. I need to watch the fifth one. And I'm probably going to. Now that I've watched the first three, I'm gonna keep going with them. But yeah, I never like at least watching the first time through. I never caught that. So that's interesting.
SPEAKER_00Nice. So do you okay, do you rank four and five as your bottom two? I'd have to.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, they're fun movies. Like, I'm not gonna like I I I hate the the one through five type discussion. We can talk about Star Wars and any other it it's it's it truly is a good movie. Like the four and five are good movies, but they're definitely at the bottom for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. What about you, Ben?
SPEAKER_00I mean, we're obviously you just watched the fifth one today, but like one one is definitely the first, and then two and three are kind of even, like we talked about, they're kind of one goose with the other. And then I think five and then four is my least favorite. I couldn't tell you why. Something about four just didn't grab me. But yeah. Yeah, I gotcha.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I actually I think I'm the exact same as you. One definitely number one. Dead man's chest. I do like better than At World's End. I think there are some elements about At World's End, as much as I love the movie that I didn't really like, I don't know, just didn't really care about, I guess. Like I'm thinking of the scene where we first see Jack and Davy Jones Locker, and I know it's I'm I'm guessing it's supposed to represent him like losing his mind down there. Yeah, like the peanut and then the crabs, and if there's something deeper going on, it was too abstract, I think, for the average viewer to understand. Yeah. But if it's supposed to be just him losing his mind, like, okay, like, but I don't know, it was just kind of this drawn-out thing for me. For sure. Yeah, I didn't I didn't like that, you know.
SPEAKER_00You guys, and probably not you. Did you ever ever play Kingdom Hearts, Cody? I've heard of it. I've been told to play it multiple times. Yeah. I think it's in the third one that they do, like you can have Captain Jack Sparrow, because it's you know, characters jumping throughout different Disney movies. You can have, I think it's the third one. You have Captain Jack Sparrow as one of your like allies or whatever, and there's there, they like kind of prick practically reenact that scene, and it's just as trippy then as it is in the actual movie. So oh
What We Want Next And Goodbye
SPEAKER_00man. Okay, I'm gonna kind of jump us into like kind of our like a shifting into our end we usually end with talking about what's next in the franchise, that sort of thing. But like let's let's talk about if a new one were to come out, and I was looking before this, there's some rumors, blah blah, maybe you have you know more. But um, if they were to announce a new one, what would you want to see in it?
SPEAKER_03Oh boy. I mean, it's gotta be the adventure. I kind of almost want you you kind of need Jack back.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_03Johnny Depp, you need Josh McGibbs, some of the main actors, but I know they're gonna be a little bit older now. Um, but I'd like to see, you know, Henry Turner and um uh what's her name, Barbosa's daughter. Spoiler alert. Um back and kind of continue that story a little bit more.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Because i I think it's gonna be hard to find a new adventure when obviously you break the trident and all the ocean's curses are there. But fun little tidbit um, in like Marvel, there is a post-credit scene. And yes, I was gonna bring that up, yeah. Yeah, so uh you have Davy Jones and you know Will Turner wakes up in bed with you know Elizabeth in the middle of the night of like a nightmare, and there's actually some crustacean or whatever it is on the on the floor of their bedroom. That's the post-credit scene.
SPEAKER_01I am I am blanking on that completely. Did I ever even see that?
SPEAKER_03Maybe not. It's at the end of five.
SPEAKER_01It's at the end of five, okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. So it's like Davy Jones is back. So I'd I'd like to explore that because I don't know, kind of like Star Wars. If you don't find a body, is he actually dead? Um, I know he fell into the ocean, but somehow. Yeah, he survived.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's interesting. Who would you want to see? I guess in addition to maybe the original cast, if they if they could get them back, I don't know. Who do you think would be interesting to see in that context? Like in a in a pirate movie.
SPEAKER_03Um, like the original cast, I like I said, I love Orlando Bloom. I would love to see Orlando and Henry kind of go out on an adventure. Uh, I think that'd be really cool. And also, I kind of liked Kieran Knightley, like uh the hot takes with the Pirate King and things like that. Should she is she deserving to be of that character in the movie, the third one? But yeah, like I it'd be kind of fun to see like a family do something and then somehow Jax is there. Like he's like the drunk uncle who's around. 100%. Yeah, the joke. Oh man, that's funny.
SPEAKER_00Mikey, do you know, do you know what cameo is in the fifth one that I completely was not ready for? That it took me a hot minute to figure out who it was. Uh no, I have no point. Paul McCartney. Oh, yeah. He, you know what, Uncle Jackson?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I did see that on the cast list.
SPEAKER_00And I forgot that he was like, Well, I was just like watching it today, and again, I was watching it while it's working, and I was just like, I looked out of the cornerbine, I was like, that guy looks so familiar. But and yeah, that's it's just a funny cameo. But no, Keith Richards is in the third one, right? I'm sorry, the third one, you're right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he's yeah, Jack's dad. Spoiler alert again. We've had a lot. Yeah. Spoiler. Again, this is at least 10 years old for the most part. Yeah. Yeah, if you haven't seen my now. Well, we're getting closer on the time. Let me uh I'll ask one more question and then we'll kind of wrap it up here. Um oh wow, we had so many good questions. Let's see here. What do you think is the most underappreciated aspect of the films? Action, comedy, music, world building, or something else?
SPEAKER_03That's a tough one. I don't know if you want to come back to me, let me think about this. Nice.
SPEAKER_00I think we've kind of alluded to it early. Like it's it's very real, brings in like a fantastical element, but keeps everything very light. I think you said it a little bit earlier that like you know, they did a great job of like it still feels like a dark world in a little bit, but there's so much comedy and like such heartwarming characters or moments that it still feels like you know, you don't you're not like bogged down with all this weight of the lore and yeah, the mission and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, real life pirates or pirates in real life history, I think we're like like gruesome, like cruel people, you know, and that is like pillaged and like killed people. Yeah. But it's like, but yeah, but I agree with that. It like it does bring this like lightheartedness to it. And it is funny. I mean, I think for the comedy, like sometimes it goes beyond just like natural funny moments to like kind of gags, which I'm not like a huge fan of. Um, but I mean the first movie is just genuinely so funny, like there's just so many, like, and I don't know if it was like all completely intentional, but um, I thought the comedy in the first in the first movie was really amazing.
SPEAKER_03Uh no, I definitely agree with that. Yeah, like the lightheartedness of that. Like, it makes you want to be a pirate. Yeah, I know, which again is like Can we just go rent a ship? Like, yeah, you know, let's go for a little sail, like you know what I mean. Like it's it's funny because like my buddy lives in Texas and there's actually a massive lake there in Austin, and he has a sailboat, and like every single time he takes the boat out, we play Pirates of the Caribbean. Like every time you start the boat trip, you gotta you gotta play because it's a sailboat, right? It's like that adventure, it's like it's iconic. So yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, nice.
SPEAKER_00Well, we kind of talked about it a minute ago, but like have you seen or heard anything about if there is anything else in the works in the Pirates franchise?
SPEAKER_03Uh just rumors. Like, uh, I know obviously Disney was waiting to see when all that controversy got cleared up, and I think people are just kind of waiting to see if they're gonna do anything with it. Um to see if they're gonna bring, you know, Johnny Depp back or explore that. I really haven't seen anything. You know, I've gone down some reddit, reddit holes and things like that, and but nobody knows. You know, it's it's one of those things that the ex execs keep close to their heart and try to decide what they're gonna do. And me personally, I'm hoping they they do something and kind of spin off because I feel like it's just a fun time, it's like it's a good adventure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it makes sense. Nice, awesome. Well, Cody, thank you so much.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so yeah. Really appreciate your knowledge and your enthusiasm, especially for the franchise. And yeah, it's it's a fun fandom. Yeah, awesome. All right, Ben, next, what's uh what's next for Fandom of Fandoms? Yeah, well, next we are gonna go back to just what how we started this this series with just the three of us. Uh you, me, and Nick. We're gonna jump into each of our own fandoms that the other two might not know a lot about. And uh I'm gonna kick it off with uh a show that's very niche, uh, but is probably my number one show of all time, community.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know that was your number one show of all time.
SPEAKER_00And again, it's such a niche show that, like, I yeah, it's it but it's my brand of comedy and just ridiculous, and I love it. Nice, sweet.
SPEAKER_01All right, that sounds great. Well, hey guys, thank you so much for listening, YouTube watchers. Thanks for watching. How does Nick end this? Thanks for watching. Nick, we need you. I'm good. All right, thank you guys. We'll see you next time.
